Getting started
How do I put the sheet on my Home Screen?
iPhone: touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap the + button (or Edit, then Add Widget), search for Instink, choose a size and tap Add Widget.
Android: touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, tap Widgets, find Instink and drag the sheet where you want it.
Tap anywhere on the widget and the sheet opens, ready to write.
What are the fastest ways in?
iPhone: the Lock Screen widget; the Instink control in Control Center (iOS 18); the Action button (iPhone 15 Pro and later: Settings → Action Button → Shortcut → Instink); Back Tap (Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap → Instink). Or say "Hey Siri, add a note to Instink" and dictate: that works without unlocking.
Android: add the Instink tile to Quick Settings (swipe down twice, tap the pencil, drag Instink in). It works from the lock screen without unlocking. On Samsung phones you can also open "Write" with a double press of the side key (Settings → Advanced features → Side key).
Can someone read my notes from the lock screen?
No. From the lock screen and from the widget you can only add notes, never read them. The sheet closes as soon as it leaves the screen, and it does not appear among recent apps.
Do I need to tap "Done" to save?
No. Every stroke is saved the moment you lift your finger. "Done" just takes you back.
Your notes
How do I send a note to Notion, Keep, Notes or email?
Open Instink, touch and hold a note (or open it) and tap Send to…. Choose the app. The note arrives as text with the image of your handwriting attached, plus any photos.
What does "Sort" do?
New notes wait there, one card at a time. Swipe right to send, left to keep, down to delete. It takes ten seconds, whenever you have a minute.
Why can't search find a note I just wrote?
Handwriting is read in the background after the note is saved, on your device. Give it a moment after opening the app. Very tight cursive is harder to read: the note is always there, even when the text isn't recognized.
Will I lose my notes if I change phone?
No, as long as your phone's backup is on: iCloud Backup on iPhone, Google backup on Android. Notes are restored with the rest of the phone. On Android, photos in notes come along when you transfer directly from phone to phone.
Can I recover a deleted note?
Not from the app, for now. Deleted notes are removed for good after 30 days.
The app said a stroke was lost. What happened?
The phone closed Instink while you were in the middle of a stroke. Everything written before it is saved; only that last stroke, less than a second of ink, is missing.
