What stays on your device

Everything you put in a note: handwriting, typed text, photos, voice recordings, and the text recognized from them. It is stored inside the app, on your phone or tablet. We cannot see it, and nobody can ask us for it, because we never receive it.

Recognition happens on the device

To make notes searchable, Instink reads your handwriting and transcribes your voice recordings. Both run on your device, using the recognition built into the operating system. If on-device speech recognition is not available on your phone, the recording is kept and simply not transcribed. Nothing is sent to be recognized elsewhere.

Permissions, and why

• Camera: only when you tap the camera on the sheet, to add a photo to a note. Photos are not saved to your photo library.
• Photos (iPhone, only if the camera is unavailable): to pick one picture you choose. Instink cannot see the rest of your library.
• Microphone and speech recognition: only when you record a voice note, to record it and transcribe it on the device.
• Calendar: none. When a note contains a date, "Remind me" opens the system's event editor already filled in. You decide whether to save the event. Instink cannot read your calendar.

Siri

If you ask Siri to add a note to Instink, what you say is processed by Apple as for any Siri request, according to your Siri settings and Apple's privacy policy. Instink receives only the resulting text and stores it on your device.

Sending notes

A note leaves Instink only when you send it, and only to the app you choose (for example Notion, Google Keep, Notes, Mail or Messages). From that moment the note is handled by that app, under its own privacy policy. Instink remembers, on your device, where a note was sent, so that it does not send the same note twice.

Backups

Your notes are included in your device's backup, on your own account: iCloud Backup on iPhone, and Android Backup on your Google account, where it is encrypted. We have no access to these backups. On Android, photos are left out of the cloud backup because of its size limit, but they move with your notes when you transfer directly from one phone to another.

Crash reports and testing

Instink contains no crash reporting or analytics code. If you have allowed your phone to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple or Google may send us anonymous crash reports. If you test Instink through TestFlight, the feedback and screenshots you choose to send reach us together with the email address of your TestFlight account, and we use them only to fix the app.

Deleting your notes

You can delete a note at any time from the app. Deleted notes are removed from the device permanently after 30 days. Uninstalling Instink removes all its notes from the device. Copies in your device backups follow the rules of your backup service.

Children

Instink collects no data from anyone, children included.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date. If a future feature needs to handle data differently, for example syncing between devices, it will be optional, and this page will say so before it arrives.
